CASCADE, CO. - Japanese motor sports legend Nobuhiro Monster Tajima sets a new record in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, racing to the top of the 14,110 foot mountain in 10 minutes, 1.408 seconds.
Tajima, drove his 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara to the new record after completing the 12.42 mile, 156 turn course.
Local legend Leonard Vahsholtz won for the 18th time in 31 races, taking the Pikes Peak Open category in a time of 11.30.536
Bobby Regester won the stock car category in 11:46.754
Clint Vahsholtz didn't finish because of a mechanical failure.
Colorado Springs native Nathan Conley set a new track record for a 4 wheel drive vehicle in the Time Attack category, finishing in 12:49.064
Paul Dallenbach took the open wheel division in 10:55.890
Todd Cook took the Mini Sprint division in 11:37.629
Rhys Millen took the 2 wheel-drive division in12:45.153
Davey Durelle took his 11th title in 750cc motorcycles in 11:41.756
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb PPIHC, also known as the The Race to the Clouds, is an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, a distance of 12.42 miles over 156 turns, climbing 1439 metres from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway at 2862 m on grades averaging 7% over both gravel and paved sections. It has taken place since 1916 and includes various divisions: Quads, Unlimited, Super Stock Car, Pikes Peak Open, Exhibition, Exhibition Volkswagen, Exhibition Bike, Showroom Stock, Big Rig, Time Attack, Vintage, Sidecar, 250cc Pro Class, 450cc Pro Class, 750cc Pro Class, Open Wheel, Mini Sprint, Protruck Division, 1200cc PRO Division.
The oldest current class is the Open Wheel division which has been run since 1916 and has been won by such names as Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, and Robby Unser. Winning time in 1916 was 20:55.40, set by Rea Lentz.
